Session 3 Tuesday Basketball & Hoops Innovation STEM Lab (Under 18)

Time: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Location: The Salvation Army Long Beach Red Shield
Join us for an engaging 9-week program designed to promote creativity, physical activity, confidence, and social connection in neurodivergent youth! Our Tuesday Basketball & Hoops Innovation Lab Program provides a structured, welcoming environment where participants can explore both athletic and STEM-based learning with support from trained staff and Coach A, who is currently pursuing a degree in engineering.
Schedule:
5:00-6:00 PM: Basketball
This session provides fundamental basketball instruction through inclusive drills, skill-building activities, and modified games suitable for all experience levels. Participants will develop coordination, teamwork, communication, and confidence while staying active in a supportive environment. All activities are adapted to meet diverse learning styles, comfort levels, and motor abilities.
6:00–7:00 PM: Hoops Innovation Lab
Facilitated by Coach Anahi, an aspiring engineer with a passion for STEM education and adaptive learning, this hour transitions participants from the court into an interactive basketball-themed STEM lab focused on creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and hands-on learning. Participants will engage in exciting weekly activities such as basketball ramp engineering challenges, reaction-time experiments, scoreboard design, mini hoop construction, basketball trajectory testing, sports science activities, and team-based invention projects. Through guided exploration in a calm and supportive setting, participants will strengthen critical thinking, communication, and fine motor skills while discovering the science, technology, engineering, and math behind the game of basketball.
Additional Program Information:
Participants may attend either the basketball session, the STEM session, or both hours.
Please provide an aide if one is required for your participant.This program is specifically designed for neurodivergent youth, including individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, learning differences, and other developmental needs.
Our staff are trained to adapt activities to ensure a supportive, safe, and inclusive experience for every participant.

Start your weekend with movement, creativity, and skill-building! Our Saturday Dance & Inclusive Basketball program combines expressive movement with structured sports instruction in a supportive and inclusive environment designed specifically for neurodivergent youth. Participants will begin the morning with an engaging dance class that promotes coordination, confidence, self-expression, and social connection, followed by basketball practice focused on developing athletic skills, teamwork, and confidence on the court. Together, these activities encourage physical fitness, personal growth, and meaningful peer interactions in a fun and welcoming setting.
This program promotes physical health, social connection, and positive self-expression through structured activities led by experienced coaches and facilitators.
Schedule:
10:00 – 11:30 AM: Dance & Movement
Participants will begin the morning with an engaging dance and movement class designed to promote physical fitness, self-expression, coordination, and confidence in a fun and supportive environment.
Activities may include:
• Guided dance instruction featuring a variety of music and movement styles
• Rhythm, timing, and coordination exercises
• Creative movement and self-expression activities
• Group dances that encourage social interaction and teamwork
• Stretching and movement-based warm-ups and cool-downs
This class provides participants with opportunities to build motor skills, increase body awareness, develop confidence, and express themselves through movement while having fun with peers.
Parent Support Group
Once per month, parents are invited to participate in a facilitated support group from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM during this time.

Participants will have time to rest, hydrate, and transition before basketball practice begins.

This session focuses on inclusive basketball instruction tailored to all skill levels and abilities.
Participants will build:

• Game awareness and basic strategy
• Teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship
• Coordination, balance, and athletic confidence
• Social skills through cooperative play and structured team activities

This week inspires campers to think outside the box while building confidence and social connection in a supportive environment.

Please note that campers who require dedicated 1:1 behavioral, medical, personal care, or safety support must attend camp with their own assigned aide, respite worker, or support person as needed.

Campers will spend the week exploring the natural world through hands-on outdoor activities, gardening projects, environmental education, adaptive recreation, and team challenges. This inclusive camp experience is designed specifically for children, teens, and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and different abilities.
Participants will engage in movement-based activities, social skill development, creative projects, and outdoor exploration while building confidence, independence, and friendships in a supportive environment.
This week focuses on connecting with nature, learning about plants and ecosystems, and encouraging curiosity through interactive experiences and community-based learning.

Who Can Participate:
This camp is designed for children, teens, and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and different abilities who benefit from structured recreation, adaptive programming, movement-based activities, social opportunities, and sensory-friendly support.
Additional Support Information:
To help create a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for all participants, camp will maintain approximately a 4:1 camper-to-staff ratio throughout programming and community outings.
Please note that campers who require dedicated 1:1 behavioral, medical, personal care, or safety support must attend camp with their own assigned aide, respite worker, or support person as needed.
Our team is committed to providing adaptive recreation, structured support, and inclusive programming for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and different abilities while ensuring each camper receives the level of support necessary for a successful camp experience.

Theme: Nature Explorers Week
Campers will spend the week exploring the natural world through hands-on outdoor activities, gardening projects, environmental education, adaptive recreation, and team challenges. This inclusive camp experience is designed specifically for children, teens, and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and different abilities.
Participants will engage in movement-based activities, social skill development, creative projects, and outdoor exploration while building confidence, independence, and friendships in a supportive environment.
This week focuses on connecting with nature, learning about plants and ecosystems, and encouraging curiosity through interactive experiences and community-based learning.
Weekly Highlights:
• Adaptive basketball instruction and games
• Nature scavenger hunts and outdoor exploration
• Planting seeds and gardening activities
• Flower dyeing science and art project
• Yoga and mindfulness sessions
• Swim lessons at Gonzalez Park (Tuesday & Thursday)
• Friday field trip to Moonwater Farm featuring seed-saving and entomology workshops
